Songs released January 24th

Well, Kiera sends her regrets. My lovely girlfriend finds herself consumed by a trillion other things this month, but promises to be back next month. As luck would have it, every time I find myself writing this column myself, it's with a crop of Mods I don't like that much. This month's 4 songs were okayish, but I really can't wait to release next month's songs (which are already done, and a really great selection of noisescapes, but you'll have to wait a month to see what I mean). Here's what you get to make due with for now.

This song is my favorite of the bunch. It begins with a technique I hadn't used in quite a long time, which is creating melodies from numerous samples. I used to be forced into that a bit more in my 4 track mod days but have strayed away from it in the last couple years. As the title might indicate, the song is never the same song for very long, there really are no common musical themes that tie it all together, but it works for me just the same. If you wait a little while the song picks up around pattern 10, and gets even better by the 13th, and then there's the obligitory wierd noisy part at the end which seems to find its way into all of my work. By the end hopefully you'll be sporting that "has Alex Lost his mind" look that I try to give to you with every song.

Title: "Good Better Bells"
Filesize: 7,916 bytes
Duration: 2:03
Patterns: 16

Good Better Bells is a pretty brash little piece for a song that only has one sample in it. I was in the mood to write something in the Holiday Season spirit (it was christmas after all) so I brought in a festive little bell, and that turned out to be the only sample the song needed. It has a nice little season mood abouit it, and it certainly wont take long to download.

Title: "e-clypso"
Filesize: 120,427 bytes
Duration: 2:39
Patterns: 15

This is another wierd one. This one actually started off on a real keyboard, as evidenced by the fact that it actually has sharps and flats in it (well okay, it has sharps and sharps which represent flats here in computerland). I guess the sound of it could best be described as Thomas Dolby meets a deep jungle tribe. I bit too wierd even for me (and that's saying a lot), but the part I came up with on my synthesizer is pretty catchy. I find myself humming it from time to time.

Title: "They Killed Kenny"
Filesize: 678,048 bytes
Duration: 2:28
Patterns: 20

Fans of Eric, Kyle, Kenny and Stan will probably appreciate this one. It takes quite a while to downaload due to the huge South Parks samples it features, but all the die hard South Park fans will want to grab a copy anyway. The music isn't that great, its mildly amusing as a distraction at points, but anyone who downloads it is probably going to grab it for the characters in it anyway.
